Short description
The best way to enjoy the beauty of Tallinn from a bird's eye view is to climb one of the Vyshgorod viewpoints on Toompea Hill.
View of old Tallinn from one of the viewing platforms of Toompea
For this, several observation points are equipped in the Upper Town, towering over the main area. The first two are on the west side of the hill. So, one of the viewing platforms is located in the governor's garden, at the foot of the Long Herman tower, next to the seat of the Estonian Parliament - the Riigikogu, housed within the walls of the medieval Toompea Castle.
And although from here for the most part only the Falgi tee road is visible, buried in greenery in summer, but here you can come close to the Long Herman and, lifting your head up, admire the power and height of the structure.

There are two paths leading to the second, more interesting site. After climbing the stairs from Toompark (Est. Toompark), townspeople and tourists will come to the northern wall of Toompea Castle. You can also get to this observation deck if you walk from the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in the direction of the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary, and, before reaching it, turn left into a side street.
From here a panorama of the eastern part of Tallinn opens with low buildings and the main railway station of the city - the Baltic Station. Similar views are also available to tourists walking around Vyshgorod, near the bell tower of the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary.
View of the towers of old Tallinn
The last two observation decks are of the greatest interest for city guests, since it is from here that you can view medieval Tallinn... You can get out to the first observation point on the Patkul stairs, following from the Dome Cathedral along Rakukokhtu street to the end. From here you can see the red tiled roofs of the Old Town and the sea with ships entering the Tallinn port, and looking to the left, the tourist will see a strict classicist building hanging over the cliff - the Stenbock House, within the walls of which members of the Estonian government sit.
View of the towers of the fortress wall and the Church of Oleviste
And finally, the last, the most remarkable observation deck - Kokhtuotsa - is located on Kokhtu street. From here you can see the whole Old Tallinn with red-tiled roofs, spiers, turrets and the Old Thomas weather vane crowning the city hall. A city visitor who has already visited the historic center of Tallinn can easily see familiar buildings and towns from Kohtuots. And by dropping a coin through binoculars, a tourist will see not only medieval windows covered with massive shutters, but also the Pirita seaside and Tallinn airport.
